In recent years, I’ve been working on a series of paintings that explore the landscape and culture of the Australian Alps. I grew up on a farm in Crackenback in the 1980s. We made mix tapes and held slalom ski races on muddy slopes. To create these paintings, I skied, with my easel, to the places where the original photographs were taken and painted en plein air. Paint does strange things when it freezes and it was a challenging experience, but I’ve never felt so at one with nature. Merging places in the present with photographs from the past, I started seeing each memory as a scene from a movie.
