Elisabeth Cummings Sunrise, the Kimberley
oil on canvas
175 x 300 cm
I was on a painting trip at the Mornington Wildlife Sanctuary in the Kimberley last year and one of the most memorable experiences was being high up on an escarpment to watch the sunrise.
My painting is an attempt to give a sense of the wide majestic landscape being suffused by the early morning light – the mountains and mesas in the distance and the complexity of tree-covered hills, rocky outcrops and gorges stretching before me. Some of the sketches that I did on the spot were a guide, but mainly I relied on memory.
