G W Bot Glyphs – three trees (homage to Rembrandt)

Glyphs are my own language for the Australian landscape – in this work, the language of the hill I live on. The trees initially seem straightforward enough but are filled with tension and movement. Nature is shown as an elemental force – the inexhaustible source of life. On another level it refers to the tree of life, a theme used in Christian iconography through the crucifixion and the sacrifice we will all experience. By being born we will die. The work pays homage to Rembrandt’s etching The three trees 1643, which deals with the same eternal theme in a Dutch landscape.
