Pablo Byass Mallee in halflight

oil on linen

40 x 45.5 cm

This painting is an elegy for my mother and her early morning walks in the Mallee country of South Australia.

I had long been convinced that Mallee woodlands were harsh, dry and monotonous places. My mother completely disagreed – to her they were rich, subtle and layered with life and colour. It took a few months of living in the area whilst caring for her as she slowly died of cancer, for me to realise that she was, of course, absolutely right.
