Tim Kyle Gunther at ease

mixed media

179 x 114 x 144 cm

This sculpture is a portrait of a work colleague. Gunther was an expert model maker and has sadly passed away. I wanted to represent my memory of him in a robust, albeit exaggerated, way. The forms are a confection of past sculptures of mine but also adhere to the impact of mass on an internal space such as a gallery.

The materials used are timber, paper pulp, cement and paint. Gunther’s face speaks of his stoic, reserved nature. The box, as his perch, is purposely disjointed and irregular because I wanted to move away from the traditional pedestal or plinth – something I’m sure Gunther would have approved of.
