Kate Shaw Charcoal (UK: Maralinga)

acrylic and resin on board

120 x 240 cm

Charcoal (UK: Maralinga) is from a recent painting series concerned with the nuclear tests conducted on earth since 1945. The title refers to the name of the test (charcoal), the country that undertook it (UK), and where it was done (Maralinga, South Australia). The tree imagery in this work is taken from recent photographs of the site. Charcoal (UK: Maralinga) reflects upon the distorted and contorted relationship between colonialism and the land.
