Peter Smets New frontier

oil on canvas

150 x 175 cm

In New frontier, I didn’t concentrate so much on a visual landscape. Instead, I painted a night scene because darkness brings more of an unknown feel to the road and where it will lead. The concrete trucks have a symbolic status as they represent progress and development. I wanted to tell the story of the never-ending hunger for new resources and land, which we continue to exploit as we have been doing ever since European settlers arrived in 1788.
