Celia Morgan Terra nullius

oil on linen board

24 x 35 cm

Atmospheric and mysterious, this work is an invocation of the sacred in all living things. A homage to the deep spirit of land. It draws for inspiration on the vastness of the Australian continent, and the great changing skies above it.

By the title I do not mean to endorse the myth of ‘terra nullius’ that scars the relatively recent history of the continent. I mean rather to bring into question the very premise of land ownership. Land, the Earth, cannot belong to anyone; it is we who belong to it. Thus can it be nobody’s land, terra nullius.
