Aida Tomescu Bribie

oil on linen

183 x 153 cm

Bribie is a painting that creates appearances and reaches for a certain state that is like a spirit of place or an intuition.

I visited Bribie Island because of my enduring interest in Ian Fairweather who lived and painted there in the later part of his life.

While the painting draws on a succession of moments and vivid memories, the content of Bribie itself developed gradually from these layers of experience and the evolving correspondence between them. I wanted to convey something of the light of this landscape and the wondrous distribution of its elements and arrive at a painting that looks as if it just landed on canvas where it has always belonged.
