Lionel Bawden The inexhaustible flux

The inexhaustible flux represents the movement of the body within the ever-changing landscape of forest, mountain and river; walking the skin of the earth. The sculpture physically mimics the voids and ellipses of mountain pools articulated by the converging lines of rock formations, while simultaneously transmitting a rhythmic pulse or vibration. Horizontal strata are inverted, flipping mountain forms into a pulse-like abstraction, where the eye of the viewer charts its own journey through interwoven pathways.The work is made from an assemblage of coloured, hexagonal Staedtler pencils, a material for which most people hold a subconscious tactile affinity and, for the artist, a core material. The inexhaustible flux pays homage to a landscape in a state of constant transformation and the physical power that landscape transmits into the body.
