Robert Malherbe Windswept coastal trees

oil on linen

94 x 78.5 cm

Although very lucky to live in the Blue Mountains, I do spend quite a bit of time painting en plein air down the south coast of NSW. I find the light around the Jervis Bay area extraordinarily intense and it’s always an exhilarating challenge to capture on canvas as much of that light as possible before sunset.

These trees were painted by a beach on an afternoon so violently windy that at one point Windswept coastal trees was blown off its easel. Luckily I caught it as it cartwheeled towards the sand.
