George Tjungurrayi Untitled

acrylic on linen

242.5 x 182.5 cm

George Tjungurrayi is a senior Pintupi artist whose paintings draw on the country into which he was born and where he lives and works.

The vast spaces of the Western Desert are captured in this painting. Tjungurrayi focuses on a claypan site north of Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay) as the main subject. It is a place associated with traditional healers – ngangkaris – and the painting alludes to their epic journeys across the land.

Of course, this is only part of the story of this painting, which in essence encapsulates not only significant places but is a key as to how they came to be.
