Tim Johnson The boab tree
acrylic on linen
183 x 244 cm
The boab tree takes a panoramic view of the Australian landscape by applying various painting styles to imagery that ranges from the desert to the spiritual or metaphysical aspect of nature itself.
The boab tree, with its ability to store water, is a symbolic presence that appears throughout the painting. Painting styles referred to include an abstract expressionist use of colour and a kind of free-form expression of the landscape space where the paint itself not only represents but becomes landscape, contextualising the experience of contemplating where we live as a wide-ranging, even cosmic, constructed space.
