The bush always waits

Rosie and I walk the track
I carry my board and easel
She carries her stick
hoping Dad might finish the painting early today
To sit and throw her favourite thing in the world
The track is steep and cool in the
shade of the mountain
Ghost gums finish the work Monet began
The fire of late afternoon light burns against
the sandstone cliffs across the valley
Still cool air makes mixing colour easier
This is the blood of our country
