In early 2018, I visited Bundanon – the property on the Shoalhaven River in southern New South Wales, which artist Arthur Boyd gifted to the nation in 1993. It is a pilgrimage long sought out by artists and subscribers to the ‘Boyd church’. A self-confessed Boyd tragic, I found the visit to the homestead and surrounding area deeply profound. I’ve always seen a link between Boyd’s Pulpit Rock and Cézanne’s Mont Sainte-Victoire. Painters require places to meditate on, places which inspire endless exploration with the ancient material of paint.
