Tom Carment Where I scattered my father's ashes, Oratunga, SA

watercolour on paper

45.3 x 52 cm

After the scattering of my parents’ ashes in Sydney Harbour, I was given the wooden box which had contained those of my father. There were still some ashes left around its edges, and so I scraped them into an old film canister. My father and I had shared a love of outback landscapes and I decided to take his remnant ashes inland, far from the sea. I waited five years until I found this valley in the Flinders Ranges, at Oratunga. I scattered them there – a small grey cloud that drifted sideways and settled on the rocks and bushes.
