Noŋgirrŋa Marawili Lightning and the rock

natural pigments and printer toner on bark (Eucalyptus tetradonta)

209 x 110 cm

This is a monolithic rock off the coast of north-east Arnhem Land, just north of Cape Shield in the Northern Territory. It is emblematic as a statue of the ancestors. This Madarrpa clan rock is set immovable in deep water hit by the electric ‘curse’ that the snake spits into the sky in the form of lightning and the oceanic sea spray. Millennia of cyclonic wave action cannot shift its holy foundation.
