Gino Palmieri Nobbys Head – storm approaching Newcastle

watercolour on paper

9 x 18 cm; 32.5 x 40.5 cm framed

The lighthouse on Nobbys Head sits at the entrance to Newcastle Harbour, like a sentinel standing guard. On this day, walking along the breakwall that juts out into the ocean, one could imagine being aboard a ship, looking back towards Nobbys Head and the city of Newcastle.

The scene was sketched very quickly as the storm came rolling in from the south. Turneresque skies with Sargent’s descriptive brushwork provide the influences to maximise the drama.

Painted just before the COVID-19 lockdown, it seems to be a premonition of impending danger.
