Noel McKenna South Coast headland (2), Ottoman rose

watercolour and ink on paper

25.5 x 45 cm

This painting is based on an old photograph I took many years ago. I’m not sure of the location, but it could be around Newcastle, just north of Sydney. That said, it could be many places where the sea meets the land. The placement of the lone tree near the edge creates a kind of apprehension when viewing the picture.

Ottoman rose, mentioned in the title, is the name of the beautiful wash I put down on the paper. It is also connected to my interest in the history and culture of the Middle East, from Egypt through Turkey to Iran.
