Reference enquiry

If you’re looking for information about an artwork, here are some options that might help.

You can visit the library to do research

The library at the Art Gallery of NSW is open to the public and staff may be able to help you find information about the artwork. Research can be conducted to locate biographical information, auction results, history of ownership (if recorded) or other relevant information if available.

If your artwork is unsigned…

We cannot provide research assistance if there is no signature on the artwork. We suggest you contact a registered art valuer.

If you live outside NSW...

We suggest you contact your state library or gallery in the first instance unless your enquiry is directly related to our collections or to art in NSW.

If you live outside the Sydney metropolitan area…

You can enquire about up to three artworks using the form below. Staff answer enquiries in order of receipt and aim to respond within 30 business days.

Enquiry form for researchers outside Sydney only

The library will be closed from 14 December 2019. We will resume processing enquiries when we reopen on 4 February 2020, in order of receipt.
