About
Holding a hand fan and draped in saffron-coloured cloth, the seated woman depicted here is likely a chaperone to a younger woman. Although not attributed as such, the style and subject of the painting link it to those from the renowned Fraser Album. Between 1815 and 1820, brothers William Fraser (1784–1835) and James Baillie Fraser (1783–1856) commissioned artists around Delhi to capture daily life in the region. A Fraser Album painting in the Gallery’s collection includes a depiction of a woman, also holding a fan, with a striking resemblance to the subject of this picture.
