About
Allan Mitelman’s long-standing practice stands out from those of his contemporaries in its idiosyncratic and unswerving commitment to abstraction. The artist resists talking about the meaning of his work, leaving it to the viewer to experience and interpret – imaginatively and associatively.
Described as ‘an art of sensibility’, it benefits from sustained observation. A palpable quality of touch is evident and appeals foremost to the senses. Complex, yet intimate in scale and intuitive in execution, his abstract mark-making is singularly obsessive, tactile and rarefied.
Untitled 2008 is a characteristically subtle painting by Mitelman in which the monochromatic base layer is drawn and painted upon with the deftest of touches, revealing traces of the artist’s hand as it moved, stopped and circled back over the surface in an agglomeration of actions. -
