About
Born in Japan, On Kawara moved to New York in the 1960s. On 4 January 1966 he began his Today series, a succession of canvases each displaying the day, month and year on which it was created. While every Today painting represents a single day, One million years – past and One million years – future are books that each list a million years, the first from 998031 BCE to 1969 and the second from 1993 until the year 1001992. The dedication in One million years – past reads ‘For all those who have lived and died’, while in One million years – future it reads ‘For the last one’.
