About
In George Condo’s words, 'drawing is a way of life, it’s a kinda private activity that you basically do when nobody’s watching'.1 An accomplished draftsman, he works quickly, calling on memory rather than working with a live model or from photographs, often not stepping back from his compositions until he’s done.
In this suite of prints we see evidence of Condo’s admiration for Spanish artists, from Francisco de Goya’s winged birdmen to Pablo Picasso’s ‘Vollard’ suite. Is that a miniature ‘infanta’ Margarita or one of Juan Munoz’s ‘Conversation piece’ figures in the female figure’s hand? A talented musician, Condo gave this suite a title that references his love of jazz and his hero Miles Davis, whose 1960 masterpiece album was titled ‘Sketches of Spain’.
