About
Leoni was the first artist to make portrait prints his specialty, engraving some forty likenesses of writers and artists during the latter part of his life. The subject of this print, Antonio Tempesta, was trained in Florence but enjoyed a successful career in Rome in the employ of Pope Gregory XIII. He painted frescoes in the Vatican and decorated Roman palaces and churches. In addition to this work he also made etchings.
