Richard Avedon’s portraits, often shot against a white backdrop without props or embellishments, featured people from a broad cross section of American society including celebrities, politicians, workers, participants in the civil rights movement, and anti-war protesters. Juan Patricio Lóobato, Carney, Rocky Ford, Colorado, 8/23/80 features in Avedon’s 1985 book titled In the American West. Commencing in 1979, Avedon travelled throughout the western states of America with a an 8x10 view camera and a tripod, visiting 189 towns over the course of five years and photographing 792 people.
