About
Throughout his career Bruegel provided original drawings to the famous Antwerp publisher Hieronymous Cock to serve as direct models for engravings. This print is one of a number illustrating the seven virtues. The focus is on compassionate works, particularly feeding and clothing the poor. Perched on top of Charity's head is a pelican, a symbol of sacrifice as the bird is said to pierce its breast to feed its offspring with its blood.
