- Further information
Employed as an official in an insurance company, T.P. Purves was married to Roberts' sister Alice. Typical of a number of the artist's portraits, it conforms to the then preferred academic formula of a brightly lit head on a dark ground with which the subject’s clothes merge. However Roberts' immense skill and individuality as a portraitist succeeds in lifting the quality of his rendition beyond the mere requirement of a satisfactory likeness.
