AGNSW Contemporary Projects

Tony Garifalakis is an artist whose work investigates political, social and religious systems of belief while questioning mechanisms of surveillance, compliance and control.

In Mob rule a selection of commercial prints, posters and advertisements have been modified and altered by a process used by government agencies to censor sensitive material in declassified documents.

The exhibition considers this process of ‘censorship’ as a strategy for eliminating meaning and shifting the context of the visual information.
