This exhibition, in the Yiribana Project Space, showcases prints and paintings from the community of Yuendumu, north-west of Mparntwe (Alice Springs), most of which refer to the elements of fire or water, or indeed both simultaneously.

Among the works from the Gallery’s collection on display are the grand collaborative canvases painted in the community in 1995 and 1997. The largest of these was completed by up to 35 artists, reflecting the shared nature of the Tjukurrpa depicted. Of a dramatically smaller scale are the Yuendumu Door etchings by Paddy Japaljarri Sims and Paddy Japaljarri Stewart, which were made in 2000-01 in acknowledgement of ‘Yuendumu doors’ – the actual doors of the community school buildings that were painted with important local sites in 1983 as a way of asserting Aboriginal culture in the then government settlement.
