oil on canvas
76.5 x 97.4 cm stretcher; 107 x 127 cm frame
This portrait of artist John Farmer (1897-1989) by Max Meldrum is now in the Art Gallery of NSW collection.
According to the Daily Telegraph of 16 January 1937: 'Special mention was made of an entry for the Archibald Prize by Max Meldrum, the Melbourne painter, which, according to the acting director of the National Gallery (Mr WH Ifould), the trustees regarded as a remarkably fine painting. The trustees did not know the name of the subject, so were unable to tell whether it was a good portrait’.
