E A Harvey Alfred Hill, Esq

The subject of this portrait is the composer and conductor Alfred Francis Hill (1870-1960), who was a leading figure in music in New Zealand and Australia, including in the establishment of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Hill had a strong interest in Maori music and culture, which inspired some of his own compositions.
