The subject of this portrait, Charles Edward Henry John Ludowici (1864–1949), was a prominent member of the manufacturing community in New South Wales, who had also been involved in local government and in the establishment of the Chamber of Manufacturers, Manufacturers Mutual Insurance and the National Roads and Motorists Association (NRMA).

Norman Carter also painted a portrait of Charles’s younger brother FJ Ludowici – from whom Charles was estranged – which was in the 1943 Archibald Prize.
