George Furner Langley (1891–1971) served in both the First and Second World Wars, but was primarily a teacher and education administrator.

In the early 1950s, Bruce Fletcher (born 1937) was a student at Melbourne High School where Langley was principal from 1949 until his retirement in 1956, and where Fletcher’s portrait of Langley is now located.

Fletcher also studied at Prahan College of Advanced Education as well as privately under eight-time Archibald-winning artist William Dargie. He exhibited eight works in the Archibald between 1955 and 1961. In the late 1960s, he became the first of two official war artists appointed during the Vietnam War.
