Due to building works at the Gallery, there was no Archibald Prize 1968 exhibition so no selection of finalists for display.

This portrait by Stanley Ballard of Bruce Fletcher (born 1937) – an official war artist during the Vietnam War – was one of the total number of entries from which the judges chose the winning portrait. The painting is now in the Upper Yarra RSL, Victoria.

Only the winner – William Pidgeon’s portrait of artist Lloyd Rees – was hung at the Gallery, along with winning works from the Wynne and Sulman Prize competitions.
