Indonesian textile traditions

Batik with wayang design c1900 (detail), Indonesia

This exhibition presents examples of lavish court textiles from Java, boldly designed warrior cloths from Sumba, narrative paintings of the Ramayana epic from Bali, ship cloths from Sumatra and Indian trade cloths made specifically for the Indonesian market.

The displays are arranged thematically into groups relating to life-cycle ceremonies (such as the tooth-filing ceremony), temple rituals, and court occasions, providing insights into the cultures that produced and valued these magnificent textiles.
